Moeraki

Moeraki is a small and sleepy fishing village on the south-east coast of the South Island, nestled under a peninsula with a rare north-facing outlook over the rest of the coast.

Meaning 'sleepy sky', or 'a place to rest by day', Moeraki maintains the feel of this old Maori resting place; the village hugs a quiet, golden-crescent beach and fishing boats scatter the bay, providing the area with an abundance of the freshest seafood. Enjoy watching the boats come and go from the famous Fleur's Place restaurant, or head to the Moeraki Lighthouse to spy on yellow eyed penguins.

Located 70 km north of the city of Dunedin, Moeraki is now most famous for its boulders; mysteriously spherical stones scattered across a beach just north of the village, some more than 2 metres (6.6 feet) across. Formed in ancient sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago by a similar process to the formation of pearls, the Moeraki Boulders are a must see if you're driving between Oamaru and Dunedin, and can be accessed off State Highway 1.
